Filing and formal examination

Electronic or paper filing; IPPO checks completeness and assigns the filing date.

Publication at 18 months

The application is automatically published 18 months from the earliest priority, unless withdrawn earlier.

Request for substantive examination

The applicant must file a separate request within the prescribed time (typically 6 years). No request — the application lapses.

Office Actions and amendments

IPPO may request amendments to the description or claims. Amendments must not introduce new matter beyond the original disclosure.

Decision and grant publication

On grant, the certificate issuance fee is paid and the annual maintenance fees begin.
